米沢市にある「天元台高原」は、標高1,300mに位置し、晴れた日には蔵王・鳥海・月山・飯豊・朝日連峰を一望できます。日本百名山の一つ、吾妻山の最短登山口でもあり、ロープウェイやリフトを利用すれば気軽に山頂へたどり着けます。北望台を起点に湿原などを散策するトレッキングコースが人気で、夏は避暑として全国各地より登山客が訪れます。
また、冬は上質のパウダースノーを楽しめる天元台高原スキー場があり、初級者から上級者まで幅広く楽しめるフィールドが整っています。標高1,350mから1,820mに位置するゲレンデは、例年、11月下旬より初滑りができ、GW頃まで春スキーを楽しめます。
