全国の社会保険病院等（社会保険病院、厚生年金病院、船員保険病院）は、これまで、独立行政法人年金・健康保険福祉施設整理機構（ｒｆｏ）が（社）全国社会保険協会連合会、（財）厚生年金事業振興団、（財）船員保険会に運営を委託して医療を提供してきました。年金・健康保険福祉施設整理機構法の改正（平成23年法律第73号）により、平成26年4月にこれらの病院はｒｆｏが改組されて発足する独立行政法人地域医療機能推進機構（ｊｃｈｏ）が直接運営する病院グループとなりました。ｊｃｈｏは、５事業（救急医療、災害医療、へき地医療、周産期医療、小児医療）、５疾病（がん、脳卒中、急性心筋梗塞、糖尿病、精神疾患）、リハビリテーションその他地域において必要とされる医療及び介護を提供する機能の確保を図ることを目的としています。
