日本医療情報学会は、年に2回の大きな学術集会【日本医療情報学会秋季大会（医療情報学連合大会）、日本医療情報学会春季大会（日本医療情報学会シンポジウム）】を開催する他、複数の研究会を傘下に持ち、活発な学術活動を行っています。会員は、医師のみならず、看護師、薬剤師、臨床検査技師、診療放射線技師、事務担当者、病歴担当者、コンピュータ技術者等の多様な職種からなっており、非常に学際的な学会となっています。設立以来、国際医療情報学連盟（IMIA）に加盟する日本の唯一の学会として国際的にも主導的役割を果たしています。
